Shivapuri National Park is located in the northern part of Kathmandu Valley. It covers an area of 159 sq. km (61 sq. mi). It is the second highest hill near the Kathmandu valley which is at the altitude of 2563m. It is also the trekking route to Nagarkot, Gosainkund, Helambu and the Langtang National Park. It is a paradise for bird watcher as one hundred and seventy seven species of birds and 500 species of animals are found here. The park’s forests are Pines, Oaks, and Rododendron trees etc. Shivapuri Hiking trek is the perfect spot for those who wanting for short trek as there are many hiking trail that may take from 2 hours to 9 hours’ time and ranges from 1300 to 2725 m in altitude. It lies about 12km away from the center of Kathmandu Valley.

Shivapuri Hiking can be done throughout the year. Hike starts from the southern boundary of the Shivapuri area. One should start up by climbing the stairs as a part of trail consists of stone steps leading to the peak. On the way, pass Nagi Gumpa at 2340 m, is another attraction where the nuns can practice Buddhism and meditation. It is famous among foreigners. Also the cultural encounter of both Hindu and Buddhist practices.

 The peak of Shivapuri is located at an altitude of 8,963 feet (2732 meters). From the peak Langtan Mountain Range, Jugal Himal, Ganesh Himal looks beautiful. This park offers an excellent view of majestic Himalayas, beauty of area’s lush surroundings, biodiversity, cultural and the rural village life style. There is also a view point where one can view the Himalayas from Rolwaling to Dhaulagiri range. After the amazing hike there is an option of teahouse, resort. Finally taking a shortcut to Budhanilkantha in about two and half hours’ and drive back to Kathmandu. This hiking will be an amazing and long lasting experience.
